The leader of the Malta Labour Party and his two deputies yesterday visited Karin Grech's grave at the Addolorata Cemetery to mark the 31st anniversary of her death by a parcel bomb.

Ms Grech, 15, died soon after the parcel bomb exploded in their house in San Ġwann three days after Christmas of 1977. The parcel was addressed to her father, Edwin, a gynaecologist who at the time served at St Luke's Hospital during a strike by Maltese doctors.

Labour Leader Joseph Muscat, accompanied by Anġlu Farrugia and Toni Abela, described the murder as an "ugly wound" in Maltese society "which, like all the other wounds, needs to be healed".

Nobody was ever officially charged with the girl's murder but a police inspector recently said in court that new lines of investigation had been opened. He was unable to elaborate because a magisterial inquiry was underway.

Mass for the repose of Ms Grech's soul was held at the San Ġwann parish church yesterday evening.
