GRTU boss expected to run on Nationalist ticket

Vince Farrugia

Vince Farrugia, director general of the Chamber of Small and Medium Enterprises, GRTU, is considering entering the political field as a Nationalist Party candidate for June's MEP elections.

Sources in the GRTU and the PN confirmed his intentions; however, when contacted, Mr Farrugia did not commit himself, although he did say he was interested.

Mr Farrugia, 64, told The Sunday Times that his first loyalty remained with the GRTU, although he admitted that running for the MEP elections was "one of the options currently being promoted by others," stopping short of mentioning names.

Asked directly whether he decided to join the political fray as a PN candidate, Mr Farrugia would only say he believed he still had a lot to do at the GRTU and he had the support of practically all its members to carry on.

At the same time he admitted that a job in Brussels also interested him: "It is true that the European Parliament interests me and it's a logical extension of a career like mine. I know I can be a very effective member."

When pressed, he confirmed that many were approaching him to contest.

"It's an issue I have to decide in consultation with many people. I will decide when I'm sure it's the best for our country and for the people I love. Then it's up to the voters and the Almighty. At my age, it will be a great honour to serve my country as an MEP," he said.

Earlier this month, Mr Farrugia was decorated with the state's Midalja għall-Qadi tar-Repubblika by President Eddie Fenech Adami for his work at the helm of the GRTU for the past 15 years.

The Sunday Times is informed that Mr Farrugia's candidature will not be made public before the GRTU's next annual general meeting scheduled for mid-January.

Mr Farrugia's candidature is considered to be a controversial one by many PN insiders due to his political background. However, sources close to the GRTU said Mr Farrugia's decision had the approval of the PN leadership, including that of Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi.

A convinced Europhile who openly backed Malta's EU accession in the 2003 referendum, the GRTU's boss is also considered as one of the main contributors towards the PN's last electoral defeat in the 1996 elections with his crusade against the introduction of VAT.

Mr Farrugia's political baggage includes close collaboration with former Prime Minister Dom Mintoff and other prominent Labour ministers in the 1970s and early 1980s. At the time, he was entrusted with many sensitive positions in that administration including that of chairman and chief executive of the National Tourism Organisation.

During his career, Mr Farrugia has also been appointed by both Nationalist and Labour administrations on the board of various government agencies, including Mid-Med Bank, Bank of Valletta, Maltacom, Go Mobile as well as chairman of the Mediterranean Film Studios.

Currently, Mr Farrugia is also a board member of Malta Enterprise and the Building Industry Consultative Council.

I wonder if Mr Farrugia will now seek media publicity..

That would be rather strange!

I recall Vince Farrugia telling me on the phone, rather angrily, that he should be sending the company I worked for a bill for featuring some of his comments on TV.....
Mario De Bono (on 28/12/08)
Vince would make an excellent MEP with whatever party he decides to contest with. As a long standing member of GRTU, which is made up of such diverse people that it is rife with internal discussion, Vince has always been the mouthpiece of the membership, and his views reflect that pulse. I have known Vince ever since he was employed with GRTU and he has a lot of street cred because he is the only person who has the courage to call a spade a spade instead of a bloody earth moving implement. For al of you who judge his then anti Vat crusade, the membership asked him to do so, and this was made up of supporters of both parties. GRTU was never against VAT, but the way it was high handedly implemented.Dont u remember EFA saying that the PN had made a mistake in implementing it when the were ousted in 1996 ? The civil service at the time made a hash of it and the politicians did not listen to the people but their civil servants. Vince is the only shield small businesses have. But he will be selfless in his service to Malta

a convinced europhile ? and since when mr camilleri. if my memory serves me right at the time of the eu referendum campaign the grtu headed by mr farrugia was against eu joining. then at the eve of the referendum something happened and the grtu's reasoning experienced a 360 degrees turn. now we have it that at 64 mr farrugia is having a go at it. and if he is elected? it would be interesting to know if he will keep on pressing to take his party government to court on water and electricity bills and if need be jugzhom lil tal eu ukollllllll...........hallina man.

It explains alot...

Now if certain people like have been living on Mars for the past couple of years...well....thats not really my problem!

So if Mr Farrugia contests the MEP elections under the PN flag and, say, he is not elected, will he remain as head of GRTU or would he resign and not join the union again???

@Jeremy Camilleri

Explains what? For me this is a total surprise! Remember 1996 the anti-Vat lobby? MLP..er excuse me PL.., GWU and GRTU?!?!?!?!?!

Dalwaqt naraw lill Karmenu johrog ukoll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That explains alot!!!!!!!!!

ahhh, so now unions CAN be politically-affiliated...oh my how things change!!!

I am not against Vince Farrugia contesting the coming Euopean elections. After all he was always a convinced Europhile and did his best for Malta to join Europe.
What irritates me are those Eurosceptics who strongly opposed Malta joining the EU and now are all clamouring for jobs in Brussels. This barefaced hypocrisy has now become a standard feature.
Mike Magri (on 28/12/08)

So... Mr. Vince Farrugia, Director General of the GRTU, is going to try his Pockets` Luck as an MEP, under the GonziPN Flag...!!! Heq... I NEVER doubted Mr. Farrugia`s PN`sPolitical beleives at all... Thus I NEVER EVER was fooled by his `Theatrical Balancing Acts`... Of course, this is a democratic country, and Mr. Farrugia may choose his political or any other beleives, as much as he wants or Sooths Him Best....

But now i have a question for Mr. Farrugia, (out of many others), and here it is...

Mr. Farrugia... You openly declaired a `million` times, that you are strongly against the new Water & Electricity tariffs and also of being back dated to October, 2008... Are you still of the opinion that, IF NEED BE, you will take the GonziPN government to local and/or eu courts if the government remains adamnant...????????????????

Ohhhh.... Yessssss..... How about you Gejtu of UHM....!!! Ma Tithajjarx....!!!???!!!???

Haaaaa.. Haaaaa... Haaaaa.....

M.Buhagiar (on 28/12/08)
@M.Psaila
I urge you to wait until the holidays are finished and YOU will get to know IMPORTANT things about it -tahwid li ghandu il- PN ... you`re in for quite a surprise !!!

So I invite you not to count your chickens........ and not to forget to pay your Water and Electricity bills since they are in the post waiting for the festivities to pass !!

R De Battista (on 28/12/08)
@ m psaila
That's not the issue here! The whole issue is CREDIBILITY! People will judge Mr Farrugia, and all other candidates on the basis of credibility or the lack of it. And the truth is that Mr Farrugia has been taken for granted by people watching the news. (And here I'm talking about ppl following current affairs, be it on Net, One, TVM or any other newsroom.)

As for internal affairs, we all know that a political party without internal dialogue is an irrelevant party. After all, you say it was EFA who introduced the word 'dialogue' in the Maltese dictionary!!
m psaila (on 28/12/08)
I bet you anything that now the Labour Party media will start attacking Vince Farrugia...l-aqwa li kull darba li Vince Farrugia kritika l-Gvern il-media Laburista poggietu fil-headlines u damu jirrepetu l-kritika tieghu ghal granet shah...but now that he might be a PN MEP candidate its a different story and Labour will try its best to discredit him..that is how Labour works...

to you Labour apologist bloggers ahjar you focus on the internal tahwid there is within Labour as evidenced by the front page story of today's Sunday Times!
R. De Battista (on 28/12/08)
Given Farrugia's "credibility" I won't be surprised if we see him contesting a future election with another party after this one!!
We are used to seeing Mr Farrugia giving a positive comment on Net tv and a negative one just a week after on ONE tv!

NOT SURPRISED AT ALL!!
Alex Cutajar (on 28/12/08)
It finally came out. Mr. Vince Farrugia has always been a PN puppet and has always confronted the government on issues which were already pre-agreed he would win in order to look good with his members. he never confronted the Goverment on the tax persecutions during the previous legislation from tax compliance, he never confronted the government on issues which the self-employed have been fleeced. Even the utility complaint he posed was a farce when he did not join the other Union members in the march.

Now, the truth has surfaced that the GRTU was being led by another instrument of the PN propoganda machine with the hope of buying himself a secure retirement off his union members who he hopes will elect him.

Mr. farrugia you are not to be trusted. You have done too many U-turns which leave a lot to be desired and if this is the truth, you should resign from the GRTU asap.

What people do for money!!!
Joseph Agius (on 28/12/08)
Thank you Vince for sacrificing yourself for us. But are we really worth it? Why would you go to that trouble for a mere 80,000 euro plus allowances? Why oh why?
lgalea (on 28/12/08)
The true colours are coming out for those who previously had any doubts.
m psaila (on 28/12/08)
Vince Farrugia would make an excellent MEP... he is a strong negotiator, at times hard headed, a no-nonesense type of person....he would be a great asset not only for the Pn but also for Malta...congrats!
John Cini (on 28/12/08)
Another selfless candidate who will run because he's been 'approached by others' and not because he's drawn by the MEP perks and 80,000euro salary!

We are truly a blessed nation to have so many altruists asking for our vote.
r pace (on 28/12/08)
Mr Farrugia should remain at the GRTU - the PN already has enough and great loyal candidates.....
P Debono (on 28/12/08)
NOWHERE in the world would we find such powerful stakeholders as trade unions and most of the media which have such a strong interest in political parties.

It is sickening to know that one cannot join the union that he desires because he knows it is an extension of a political party. And it is even more dangerous that our children are being brainwashed by the false propoganda being issued by Super ONE and NET TV.
