The changes carried out in the Labour Party following the last general conference are a reflection of the new breath of life the party currently enjoys.

Labour's 'steel' soldiers, who were at the forefront to make sure that the necessary changes are carried out, will always remain the life and spirit of PL.

As a delegate of the party, I wish to take this opportunity to extend my appreciation to my fellow delegates for their courage and fruitful work to make PL more effective. This will, in the shortest time possible, lead Malta to having the government it truly deserves, headed by a forward-looking leader with a prosperous vision and realistic roadmap for this country.

The global village we belong to today does not permit us to stop and think about how to improve further within the party's structures.

In my opinion, the civil society and NGOs should play an important role within the Labour Party. The party's finances have always been a problem. Unlike our political adversaries, the PL does not have the financial backing of the majority of the elitist business community. Yet, it is encouraging that whenever the party asked people to make financial contributions towards its coffers, the reaction was always very positive.

However, one needs to be more eloquent when approaching the people to help the party improve its financial situation. For instance, in my opinion the scheme of the one euro direct contribution from people's bank account to the party is not a workable formula. Given the administration of the local banking system, people would refrain from giving financial support to the party through direct banking.

The structural changes made particularly to the party's financial department, such as with the formulation of the post of Chief Executive Officer, should serve the PL to have a professional and effective base.

The time has come to concentrate on the role of the party's local centres. Maybe with better coordination at local and district level, these centres can be transformed into a sea of knowledge by holding educational, social, cultural and environmental activities.

I am confident that my friends and colleagues, 'is-suldati tal-azzar', have other thoughts and suggestions with which we can make the Labour Party more dynamic, modern and closer to the needs of the people.
