Three marsh harriers, which were shot at during the autumn migration season in Malta, were released at the Vendicari Nature Reserve, in Sicily earlier this month.

BirdLife's conservation manager André Raine said the species were only some of the many birds sent to the Centro Recupero Fauna Selvatica in Messina, Sicily, under licence by the Malta Environment and Planning Authority. Injured birds are sent to Sicily as their are no rehabilitation facilities for wild birds on the Maltese islands. The centre has an on-site veterinarian and large outdoor aviaries where birds can regain their strength while their wounds heal.
