A 26-year-old Tunisian who head-butted a glass pane of the Wembley food store in Valletta was conditionally discharged for one year.

Hassan Ali Mohamed Abdel, a resident at the Ħal Far tent centre, said he had had an argument with the police in Republic Street on Christmas day at around 8.30 p.m.

The court heard how he had also damaged a police station window, assaulted the officers and tried to escape custody after being arrested.

After hearing that Mr Abdel was ready to pay the €200 in damages for the shop window and the police station, Magistrate Anthony Vella conditionally discharged him for one year.
