Russian warships to make rare visit to Malta

Russian naval vessels will pay a rare visit to Malta next month, sources said

They will be the Udaloy class destroyer Admiral Levchenko, the salvage tug Nikolai Chiker, which is reputed to be the most powerful in the world, and either the Udoloy II class destroyer Admiral Chabanenko of the Boris Chilikin class support ship Sergey Osipov.

The ships form part of the Admiral Kuznetsov carrier group, a task force from the Northern Fleet which has began a tour of duty in the Atlantic and the Mediterranean.

They are expected to be in Malta between January 17 and 20.

An American Arleigh Burke class destroyer is expected in Malta earlier in the month.
