Petrol station owners get partial refund
Petrol station owners are to be given a partial refund of the price difference on their stocks following the announcement of lower prices, the government said. Agreement was reached at a meeting between the Infrastructure Ministry and the GRTU.
The ministry explained that the refund would only cover part of the difference between the old and the new prices since the petrol station owners had profited when prices went up in the past.

I agree with A VAssallo...many times petrol station owners made profits at the expense of their customers, when fuel bought at old prices was sold at new prices when the rate went up. In this case the customers were never refunded.
However we must all welcome the new rates, and hope that those responsible for buying fuel in this country follow economic trends of crude oil and buy their stock accordingly.
Merry Xmas to all :)

Best Thing is De Regulate the Petrol & Diesel Prices ONLY not Gas n Kerosene,
Good For all.
Think About it...
No Subsidies and no Burden, Petro & Diesel is a business so let it go with the market up n down who will be benefit in END..
Of Course TAX Payers who will get better roads better transportation, Better Security.
Govt need tax percentage whether the price is low or high it will be same throughout.
So Price will automatically come down, and subsidised money which was being given to the OMC will be used to National Purpose..
Well I think Petrol Station Owners, OMC need the market to sell Product. so let them and govt need to get tax so let the GOVT De Regulate the Petrol & Diesel Price in INTREST OF NATION FOR THE PEOPLE AND BY THE PEOPLE.
JAI HIND...

"Government was fair with both consumers and petrol station owners"
Fair? Do you expect us to thank Gonzipn for the long time that he's been stealing our money with exorbitant fuel prices when ALL the other countries had dropped their fuel prices immediately? We expect a refund not thank him. The same applies to the water and electricity tariffs.
"CAN WE PLEASE JUST WELCOME THE REDUCED FUEL PRICES ..."
No we cannot. We want a refund of the money stolen from us by Gonzipn.
"OR HAVE WE BECOME A NATION OF MOANERS?!"
Do you expect us not to complain when we are being robbed left, right and centre, top and bottom, front and rear by Gonzipn?

I agree with earlier comments that Petrol Stations should not be given any refund, they had it good for quite some time now. By the way, shouldn't we now expect that the price of Bread, Buses and all other goods/services directly influenced by the price of petrol and diesel also decrease?

@ M.Psaila.
NO IT'S NOT THAT WE'RE BECOMING A NATION OF MOANERS.
THE GOVERNMENT KEEP HITTING US WITH ALL THESE TAXES AND HIGH PRICES AND THEN ONCE IN A WHILE THEY GIVE US A HINT OF GOOD NEWS, (IF YOU CAN CALL IT THAT) SO BIG FISH LIKE YOU CAN SWALLOW THE BAIT AND FORGET ALL ABOUT THE BAD NEWS.
THAT'S THE WAY THIS GOVERNMENT WORKS.

I simply want to know if petrol station owners sold out petrol and diesel with the cheaper price they paid for before every price hike.
If now they want compensation for what they still had in their reservoirs at dearer prices, with the same reasoning, they also should pay the difference for what they will still have in their reservoirs at the cheaper prices.
This is the only FAIR WAY to tackle the problem.

@M. Psaila and all those who are constantly blowing the "we have become a nation of moaners" trumpet:
As long as powers that be continue with their double standards, preferential treatment and hush strategies, YES, we will rightly remain a nation of moaners. I agree that petrol station owners should not have been compensated a single cent. Like any business, they are taking a risk. I do not get compensated when my suppliers decide to slash their pricings or release new product models and I had already stocked an older model or purchased at a higher price.
Similarly, as has been said before, petrol station owners were not asked to pay for the cost increase when gas prices went up, they just had a greater margin until their old (lower cost) stocks lasted and they had to purchase new stock... GRTU didn't threaten at the time.

Why didn't the petrol station owners refund the government when the petrol prices rose and they had bought the stocks with a cheaper price?

Before anyone congratulates the government and the GRTU. Can someone confirm or deny that when there were the various hikes in petrol prices the petrol station owners forked out the difference? If they did not then why give them the refund?

maybe this was done to keep GRTU quiet about the water & electricity tariffs? i wonder what vince farrugia has to say about this? but then maybe i'm wrong and all this was done in true xmas spirit!!

A formula should now be agreed upon to avoid future disputes since we expect fluctuations in the price fuels.

@ A Vassallo
I beg to differ. Whilst i condemn those who yesterday morning sold fuel with the old rates, yet it is only fair that because prices were slashed immediately gov had to compensate for the loss the petrol station owners suffered.
It's not the case of keeping anyone quiet. Government was fair with both consumers and petrol station owners, goodwill prevailed in this case and the outcome was successful to all parties concerned.
The overall winner in this case however is the consumer! As soon as these slashed rates were announced i could hear my wallet breathing a sigh of relief!!

I bet that since the many times petrol and diesel increased in the last 18 months confronted to the only one time that these prices went down, petrol station owners have made a lot of unjust profit.
So first they sold at higher prices than they bought, and we drivers paid out of our pockets, now they were partially refunded money out of our taxes. That makes us poor drivers forking out money twice.
THIS IS VERY UNFAIR just to keep them quiet.

Where there is a will there is a way!
Government and GRTU got around the table and reached an amicable solution.
This is how things should be done.
Well done Government and well done GRTU!

Very reasonable indeed. At least everyone should now be happy with this situation. The government tried to please all parties concerned and it managed.
Merry Christmas to everyone!!!
