Gozitan hit-and-run driver still at large
The police are still trying to track down the driver of a white pickup van involved in a hit-and-run accident in which a 42-year-old man died, probably accidentally.
Joe Grima from Xewkija died during a tussle he was involved in with a relative near the heliport in Mgarr Road, Ghajnsielem, one of the busiest thoroughfares in Gozo. The victim was walking with his wife at about 1.30 p.m. on November 9, when a 48-year-old relative emerged from a car and a fight ensued.
In a tragic turn of events, Mr Grima ended up in the middle of the road, in the path of a vehicle that ran him over. The driver of the vehicle, which, according to eyewitnesses, was a white pickup van, did not stop.
Mr Grima was rushed to Gozo's general hospital but died shortly afterwards.
The police believe the driver of the pickup van had no connection with the argument.
Inspections were carried out on vehicles on the island and the police were also keeping a close eye on those boarding the Gozo ferry. They had also questioned a number of people.

Lighten up please. Just because one is from another country it does not mean that he or she cannot sound off and point the shortcomings they they would like to see ameliorated. After all there are a lot more Maltese like me that made their home in other countries and were not treated so rudely than the few that chose to retire on Malta. After all we all want Malta and Gozo to be a better place for everyone and to pretend that everything is fine and dandy is self deluding.

@charles Sammut @ Mike (NZ) yes my friend i followed the article in the Times a Maltese colleague mentioned it to me as i was hopeing to visit Malta & Gozo in the near future, not so sure now as my guess is that the local police just haven't as yet grasp the law system in that part of the world, in otherwords they should get their priorities right and go after the real criminals not this poor American citizen who as i understand was doing a fine job volentary so i read. Visiting Gozo- well i shall have to rethink my plans very carefully.

Such a small Island and so few registered cars and yet the case is still unsolved. I wonder how long it would have taken to check every car and van on Gozo. that fit the description...But of course the Police are more concerned and worried about a retired and very qualified American Vetinarian who was helping out tending and caring for some poor animal without a warrant. I am sure the detective will be getting a promotion soon.

@C.McFarlain yes Mr.McFarlain although you have the right to comment Malta being a democratic country and also the freedom of movement in an eu member state it was however your choice to retire in my country of birth and regardless Malta will always be in my heart whatever, without being disrespectful to you or any setler in my beautiful island , ofcourse there is nothing to stop you from returning to your homeland and vice versa nothing to stop you returning.Unfortunitly these kindsof incidents tend to flare up round about this time of the year but without sounding rude, read the Times of Malta more often then before making a deccession at least you keep up to date on whats going before making a move. Good Luck anyway - Have a nice christmas. Doris Bartolo ex-pat.

@McFarlain well sir its ok for you foreigners most who are renting a property all you have to do is to pack your belongings and return back home without the hassle of selling up which tend to prove a bit difficult now a days in Malta to find any buyers, so most of us have to stay put , i just hope our children will have a better future for their sake and ours, thankyou verymuch. Ex-pat hopeing to resettle

Reading all this crime going on latey on these islands, we now know that we made the rong move retireing to Malta, i would have never thought these islands would deteriate so fast in crime beit shooting, stealing, armrobbery, fraud, driving without due care to other road users and to top it all up the sterling going down the pan so fast that our exchange rate is next to nothing.Like most countrymen of ours as they have started doing on the Spanish islands we decided to return back to Britain at least our pensions wil last us a bit longer before things get really out of hand. Sorry but its all doom and gloom all wround. As the song goes (it will be Lonely this Christmas)for most of us foreigners. Cedric & Co.
