I felt a great sense of loss and deep sorrow when a text message from my brother brought me the sad news that Can. Joe Mejlaq had died. I had the privilege to get to know Joe during the six years we spent together studying for the priesthood at the Gozitan seminary. We studied together and were ordained together in 1973. He was a ray of hope and joy especially to me during those challenging years of formation. It was always a pleasure and a joy to meet him on my visits to Gozo over the past 30 years. We were five ordained together, now we are just three.

Joe had a real sense of humour always expressed in a courteous and gentle way. He was a kind and compassionate person, always there for others. He will be missed by many for he was loved by many.

Till we meet again, dear friend, we pray for one another. My condolences and prayers to his family. Eternal rest grant to him O Lord. May he rest in peace. Amen.
