Mqabba net second consecutive win

Mqabba put behind them their disappointing start to the season when they beat Senglea Athletic for their second successive win yesterday.

Bobby Giorev's team played with great attitude with Claudio Calleja and Shawn Magro offering excellent service to striker Paul Chimezie who was a constant threat to the Senglea defence.

Mqabba started to venture from the outset and took the lead on 20 minutes when Calleja sent a dangerous cross in the area and Senglea defender Brady Zerafa, in an attempt to clear, slotted the ball past his own goalkeeper.

Giorev's side kept up the tempo and on 23 minutes Mauro Bonnici's header just missed the target while at the other end Andrew Sciortino's effort was well-saved by Kris Calleja.

On 35 minutes Mqabba were unlucky when a Michael Borg Olivier shot hit the foot of the post. They were again unlucky just before the break when a Chimezie free-kick hit the bar.

Mqabba doubled their lead on 50 minutes when Chimezie headed home Edric Borg's corner.

Senglea tried to hit back and on 58 minutes Chris Borg pulled a goal back when his low shot had the better of Calleja.

On 70 minutes, Chimezie headed wide a Magro cross while Senglea's Justin Felice saw his shot finish just wide.

Mqabba had the last laugh though when Magro turned past two defenders and beat Attard with a low drive.
