One road more important than Ghadira

I agree with Edgar Rossignaud (December 16) regarding the government's questionable infrastructural works priorities. One wonders why the government seems so obsessed with the Ghadira road, especially when it is well aware of the precarious traffic problems in Sliema and Gzira which will soon precipitate further with the Tigné mega-development projects (MIDI and GAP), thus adversely affecting the residents' health and quality of life.

Residents rightly question why no funds have yet been allocated to the planned "link road" joining Regional Road to Gzira Strand and to the planned widening of the The Strand, particularly when traffic problems in the area (including pollution) are so pressing.

This Ghadira red herring smells nastier when one considers that the Tigné Point developers have already paid their relevant contractual obligations to fund such infrastructure, and also when the government has received millions from the sale of Holiday Inn.

In the circumstances many of us Sliema/Gzira residents feel sorely let down and cannot therefore take the government's proclaimed environmental agenda seriously for obvious reasons.
