The winners of the sixth Malta Engineering Excellence Awards (MEEA) were announced on December 5 at a reception hosted by the Chamber of Engineers (CoE).

The event was supported by Malta Enterprise (ME) and the awards were presented by Chris Falzon, chief executive officer of ME and Helga Pizzuto, president of the CoE.

The MEEAs provide national recognition to individuals and organisations who have achieved outstanding engineering accomplishments. Three awards are given annually: for innovation, leadership and lifetime achievement.

This year's award for innovation went to Engineering for Science and Industry (ESI) for its outstanding skill and engineering competence in overcoming technical challenges.

ESI won the award for implementing a continuous flue gas monitoring system on the Delimara and Marsa power station chimneys.

Another two projects, one by Playmobil Ltd and another by Go plc, were shortlisted for the same category. Playmobil was shortlisted for the implementation of component recognition amalgamated with robotic integration onto its printing machinery.

Go was shortlisted for the implementation of digital television broadcasting across the Maltese islands by using multiplexing technology that provides a high-quality output to consumers.

The award for leadership was won by the Malta Group of Professional Engineering Institutions.

The group represents some 300 members and for the past 40 years has been dedicated to the promotion of the engineering profession and to the dissemination of knowledge through regular activities, expert presentations and site and technical visits to various sites around Malta and Gozo.

The lifetime achievement award went to Thomas Galea, entrepreneur and consultant, who has contributed significantly to the advancement of the engineering profession in Malta.

Mr Galea is best known as the man who runs Megabyte with his brother.

A skilled, multi-tasking engineer, Mr Galea's untiring application and inventiveness has raised the prestige and standards of engineering.

In her closing address CoE president Helga Pizzuto thanked all participants for their efforts and participation in the awards. More information can be found at www.coe.org.mt.
