Used car importers call on government to publish "residual values"
The Used Vehicles Importers’ Association is calling on the government to publish the values of imported second-hand cars from non-EU states as established by the government for registration purposes. These are known as the residual values.
Association president Oliver Brownrigg told a news conference this afternoon that people were asking the importers how much cars were going to cost and they could not give them a price which included the registration cost.
These values, Mr Brownrigg said, should be issued as soon as possible so that the members of the association could study the system and see how much everything would cost.
The members expected considerable decreases in the registration cost of second hand cars. These would then be translated in the price of the car, Mr Brownrigg said.

As I am currently in the process of registering a UK car here in Malta, I took a photo of a notice that is posted on the wall at the ADT Inspection offices. It reads:
"the Malta Transport Authority wishes it to inform the general public that all Used Vehicles imported from EU Countries will be evaluated for Registration Tax as per the UK Glass's Car Guide Book....."
Valuations from Glass's Car Guide Book can be purchased on line at a cost of UKP 3.50 per car.
This way the 'evaluation' of the Inspectors can be checked.
I've printed off the photo of the Notice for future reference.....!

@Nigel Lawrence you are absolutly right, it is wishful thinking when dealing with the Maltese Government's forthcoming agenda, somehow i don't think the cost of registration duty is going to decrease not for a million., i know when my son bought his Japanese second car in Malta, for the price he paid for it, he could have easily have bought a brand new one in the UK., so my friend you'll be better off to use the local buses at least the fares are a hell of alot cheaper then ours in England. cheers.
