Two unions claim recognition at Maltapost

Maltapost has called a meeting with the General Workers' Union and the Union Ħaddiema Magħqudin for next Friday after both of them claimed to represent more than half the workforce.

The UĦM said it had been given confirmation in writing by the management that it represented more than 50 per cent plus one of the workforce covered by the collective agreement.

But earlier, the GWU too said it had been granted recognition by the management as representing the majority of the workforce.

The UĦM said both unions had been called to a meeting in an effort to find a solution on which should make representations on behalf of the workers.

D.Borg, it would help having some info before commenting.

First of all , the UHM never considered working together in the eight years it was the sole recognised union, and the current Collective agreement, signed by the UHm was obviously made with preventing any other unions working for Maltapost in mind.

The workers did not lose a bar of chocoolate, but the right of a fair disciplinary hearing.

UhM also consented to the managements proposals that people suffering from difficult pregnancies and depression can not avail themselves to sick leave.

Postal operators working after hours are not paid overtime, and health and safety at the workplace has been ignored for the past years.

Gwu reps at Maltapost have been routinely threatened for the last couple of years, and everything possible has been done so that they have absolutely no say.

Postal staff have even been threatened recently into joining Uhm and resigning from the GWU by persons claiming to be representing the UHM.

Off course, anyone wishing to challenge me, can do so, as all off the above can be corraborated by hard evidence.

So you see Mr. Borg...its not really that simple is it?

Can't the two unions work together at Maltapost. After all they both are working for the same thing, the improvement of conditions for these workers. They are acting like two small children fighting over a bar of chocolate!!
