The council of the Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses has called an extraordinary meeting of the union, saying it wanted to assure members that there were no irregularities in the running of the union.

The council in a statement said it could not tolerate the behaviour of people who were trying to divide nurses and midwives with the clear intention of weakening the union for their own personal aims.

It deplored attacks on its members at a sensitive period when the union was having talks with the Health Minister and when it was involved in the water and electricity tariffs issue with other unions.

The meeting is being held at the Phoenicia Hotel in Floriana on Monday.

Eight former council members earlier this month started collecting a petition calling for an extraordinary general meeting to change the union's leadership.
