Sampdoria's victory sent them through from Group C along with VfB Stuttgart, who thumped group winners Standard Liege 3-0 in their final game to progress to today's last 32 draw.
Paris St Germain, twice winners Tottenham Hotspur, NEC Nijmegen and Olympiakos Piraeus also sealed their place in the first knockout round.
Back-to-back winners of the competition in 2006 and 2007 under coach Juande Ramos, Sevilla are only the second side since the group stage format was introduced in the 2004-05 season to miss out on qualification after accumulating six points.

French police reported that clashes took place in the centre of the French capital with one Twente fan requiring hospital treatment after being injured by a hatchet.
"It was a small street fight which took place around 4pm," a police spokesperson said, adding there were around 200 fans from each side involved.
