EP adopts Simon Busuttil report on business scams

The European Parliament has overwhelmingly adopted a report by Nationalist MEP Simon Busuttil on combating business directory scams. The report was adopted by 632 votes to four.

Each year several thousand businesses fall victim to scams based on misleading advertising where they unintentionally sign up to a listing in a business directory costing them hundreds of euros a year.

Dr Busuttil said the adoption of the report marks an important step forward in putting an end to this scam because it lists a set of concrete measures to raise more awareness and enable victims to seek a remedy.

The European Parliament received over 400 petitions on the issue mainly from small businesses across the European Union. It is estimated that 90 Maltese SMEs have also fallen victim to such scams.
