UK retail petrol prices have fallen to their lowest level in 21 months, the country's Automobile Association (AA) said today.

The price of petrol at the pump in Britain was 89.48 pence per litre in mid-December, falling 5.38 pence from mid-November, the AA said in a statement.

The average UK petrol price hit a record high of 1.197 pounds per litre in mid-July this year when international crude oil struck its peak above $147 a barrel.

"Petrol last cost under 89.5 pence a litre on 14 March 2007 while diesel was last below 102 pence on November 4, 2007," the association said.

Diesel retail prices dropped to 1.0193 pounds per litre in mid-December from 1.0882 pounds in mid-November.

The AA said London saw the larger drop in diesel prices than other regions and now drivers in Northern Ireland and Wales were paying for the most expensive diesel in the UK.
