Malta International Airport has just welcomed its three millionth traveller this year and is set to register another record in the volume of passenger traffic.

Julian Jaeger, MIA's CEO, presented flowers to Bernie Mizzi, identified as the three millionth passenger, who arrived on flight KM101 from London Heathrow last Wednesday.

This is the first time that MIA has reached this mark, with the national carrier Air Malta having contributed well over 180,000 passengers on the London Heathrow route alone to MIA's traffic figures so this year.

In 2007, passenger movements recorded at MIA for the 12-month period totalled 2.97 million and by the end of last month MIA had already registered a 5.3 per cent increase despite the general global downturn in tourism, a spokesman said.

This falls in line with the extensive expansion works taking place at the airport that should see a major transformation of the terminal concluded by summer 2009, the spokesman added.
