'Anomaly' in law on maintenance payments
Labour MP Josè Herrera has drafted a Private Member's Bill aimed at revising what he described as an "injustice" to married couples.
The law lays down that if a spouse fails to pay the children's maintenance as per court order, he can be imprisoned for a maximum of three months. On the other hand, if couples were unmarried but still failed to pay their children's maintenance fees they could not be punished, Dr Herrera explained.
"This is an anomaly that I think should be urgently addressed, more so when one considers that one-third of children are born out of wedlock," Dr Herrera said.

The Association for Men's Rights supports Dr. Jose' Herrera and as I myself and Charles Aquilina on behalf of our association have talked to Dr. Joseph Muscat, Leader of the Partit Laburista in a meeting at PL Head Quarters on Tuesday 9th December about certain problems, like the imprisonment of men who do not pay maintenance, we are against any imprisonment of men as this is causing men to lose their employment and more so in certain instances to lose their house as they could not pay the rent or certain expenses. - Dr. John Zammit, President, Association for Men's Rights www.freewebs.com/mensrightsmalta
