Nationalist MEP Simon Busuttil has been tasked with drawing up a report on sustainable tourism in the Mediterranean region for the Euro-Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly.

As rapporteur, Dr Busuttil's assignment is to evaluate the prevailing status of tourism in the Mediterranean region and the challenges faced and come up with specific proposals to support the industry and improve its sustainability.

The report is also set to tackle issues such as tourism infrastructure and environmental stress as well as niche sectors such as the cruise liner industry.

The first draft is scheduled to be discussed by the Economic Committee of EMPA, the parliamentary branch of the Union for the Mediterranean, in February. It will then be submitted for final approval at the next plenary meeting of the Euro-Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly to be held next March.

MEPs and representatives of national parliaments from around the Mediterranean will take part in EMPA's plenary sessions.
