A parade, a motor show and street theatre are to be held in Valletta today as the Capital continues to celebrate the festive season.
Today’s activities, being held at part of l-Istrina, will feature human statues and street theatre in Republic Street this morning.
The federation of motor sport associations will hold a car show on the Palace Square in the afternoon from 4.30 p.m. while a parade by In-Guardia historic re-enactors will be held between Palace Square and Freedom Square, also starting at 4.30 p.m.
The arrival of In-Guardia at Freedom Square will launch a big parade featuring many of the participants of l-Istrina, including MPs, trade unions, NGOs, sports organisations, local councils and the general public in what has been described as an ‘expression of solidarity’ with the needy.
Many of the participants will carry candles – some 1,000 have been prepared. Should it rain, the candles will be replaced by umbrellas also prepared for the occasion. The parade will proceed down Republic Street to Archbishop’s Street, Merchants’ Street and back to Freedom Square, led by a band and some 35 Father Christmases. More activities will be held later at Freedom Square.
Meanwhile a large live crib has been set up in the ruins of the Opera House in Valletta. The crib, including a small 'recreation' of Bethlehem, was set up by the Culture Department of the Ministry of Education and features some 30 characters. There will also be carol singing on the site.
Entrance is free, but collections will be made for the Community Chest Fund.
