Boost for local marine software engineering

Fraunhofer IESE, one of the world's leading research institutes in software and systems engineering, and the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology (Mcast) have joined forces with a local foundation to help strengthen research and education in the yachting sector in Malta.

Mcast principal Maurice Grech and Dieter Rombach, chairman of the Fraunhofer ICT group and executive director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Experimental Software Engin-eering (IESE), signed a public deed on Wednesday to join as council members of the MI-SE@Malta Foundation, the applied research and educational institute of Marsec-XL Foundation, a marine software engineering cluster of excellence based in Malta.

Prof. Grech said "together with Fraunhofer we are delighted to join Marsec-Xl to help strengthen further the research and educational aspect of this unique initiative in the yachting sector, which fits perfectly with Mcast's objective to further strengthen its operations in the marine sector."

Marsec-XL has identified extensive potential in the marine systems and software engin-eering aspects of yacht building and sees Malta as the ideal location for its development, given its strong ICT orientation, its marine heritage, its location in the middle of the yachting market and the high potential of marine infrastructure around the Grand Harbour.
