A jury in Atlanta sentenced a convicted murderer to life in prison today after he killed a judge in a courtroom and three other people while escaping from custody, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper reported on its website.

Brian Nichols was widely expected to receive the death penalty for a series of crimes committed in March 2005 that gained notoriety. He was convicted in November.
