Having always been a fervent admirer of architect Renzo Piano and having had the luck of appreciating some of his works abroad, I must express my delight on learning that he was commissioned to prepare plans to rehabilitate Valletta's entrance and opera house. Additionally, I am also pleased to learn that lower Fort St Elmo is being repossessed by the state, given a facelift and is to serve as an area for the Maltese public's enjoyment.
Reactions to the government's proposals from many associations and non-governmental organisations to revamp Valletta's entrance and the opera house are and continue to be very positive and I look forward to the completion of Mr Piano's designs and project so that come 2018 Valletta will deservedly be nominated European Cultural Capital of the Year.
