Labour to take Parliamentary action on tariffs
The Opposition will be taking all the necessary measures in Parliament next year for the responsibility of the water and electricity tariffs to be shouldered by those who should shoulder it, leader Joseph Muscat said.
Addressing a party organised activity this evening, Dr Muscat said that while the unions were thinking they were still discussing the issue with the government, the latter had already published a legal notice bringing the new rates into effect. What kind of consultation was this, he asked.
He noted that it had to be Labour to inform the people that the same notice also announced a drainage tax.
The Prime Minister was absent and silent on crucial matters for Maltese and Gozitan families. He was silent on matters which threatened the country’s democratic and European credentials such as the Mitts and the PN’s spying cases.
He urged the government to remain strong in the EU talks on the Lisbon treaty and said the Labour Party would be supporting it for Malta to retain a permanent commissioner and to be given the sixth Parliamentary seat as from the next elections.

Dr Joseph Muscat, you are mistaken. May I point out that the drainage tax is a tariff (sic) and not a tax.!!!
This government amazes me, and some people (who pretend to know better than me and you) truly astound me, how they keep themselves taken for a ride by this arrogant government.
And, for all those who think that I am politically biased, may I point out that I have done the same, criticizing the government of the day, in the 80's and 90's, when our rights were trampled upon.
Unfortunately, now, history is repeating itself, with a greater force.

Can somebody explain to me the logic being the increase of electricity meter charges - except to raise more revenue. I think the Government is loosing it this time. Even Net Television is becoming to be not much different than Super One; news which shows the Government negatively in any way is being omitted. The PN is loosing well earned public respect very very fast. They stopped practicing what they effectively preached not so long ago. What they are preaching now is not being believed. Pity.........

You cannot fool all the people all the time, but you can fool 48% of the nation all the time. Unfortunately that's enough to get elected.

Just to add a bit more salt. The drainage " Contribution " is as of 1st January 2009.It is included in the new water tariffs.

This utility Bills saga is illogical, anti-social and completely betrays the PN's social beliefs. First of all these were presented as a Hobson's choice to the taxpayers were Gatt came up with 5 proposals of which only one was plausible and possible (according to gatt!!) The government did not even bother drawing up a social impact assesment which goes to show how much our pains are important for this group of elites!!!! To add a bucket of salt to our injury the price of oil has plummeted to record levels of $42 a barrel and most countries around us are reducing the price of utilities!!!
The last twist to this sad saga is that the government LIED when it said that 73% of the taxpayers would benefit from an eco-tax as in this percentage (73%) ALL RESIDENCES were included, even the 50,000 empty properties, holiday flats and garages!! And to add even more salt gatt/Gonzi decided to introduce a drainage tax as of 2010, the same year when VAT on medicines will start being charged!!
And don't forget the increase in gas, car licences, groceries, bus fares and meter charges!!!!
Dhaqtu bina!!! Misskhom tisthu!!!!!!!!!!!........................Imma ma tergghux!!!!!
