Malta joins in celebrations marking UN climate change resolution

Rural Affairs Minister George Pullicino will be meeting United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon today during a ceremony in Poznan, Poland, marking the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the UN General Assembly resolution on climate change.

Mr Pullicino will be presenting Mr Ban with a painting by Luciano Micallef.

UN Resolution 43/53, entitled, Protection Of Global Climate For Present And Future Generations Of Mankind, had triggered the international negotiating process that eventually led to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Kyoto Protocol.

Malta had piloted the resolution at the 43rd session of the General Assembly following its request that climate change be included for the first time in the agenda.

The resolution brought this pressing issue to the attention of the international community and throughout these 20 years it has dominated the international scene as the need for action to address, mitigate and adapt to the consequences of climate change becomes more urgent than ever before.
