Consumers should not be afraid of eating Irish beef, Malta’s Food Safety Commission said this evening.

The commission said that according to the Irish Food Safety Authority, there was no reason to withdraw Irish beef from the market.

The British media on Tuesday reported that three Irish farms were embroiled in a meat scare that started with pork and spread on to beef.

The commission said that the Irish authorities were continuing with their tests to certify beef and the situation was being closely followed by the European Commission and member states, including Malta.

The commission said that beef and pork reared in Malta were also checked for Poly Cholorinated Biphenyl levels under the National Meat Control Programme. The tests have always been negative.
