Ryanair, the Irish airline, has launched a new route to Trapani, Sicily, bringing the number of routes it operates from Malta to eight.

The low-cost carrier will initially operate the new route twice a week between February 5 and April 29, after which they will increase to four weekly trips from May 1.

This new route, the fourth one linking Malta to Italy, has been welcomed by the Malta Chamber of Small and Medium Enterprises - GRTU.

"Apart from benefiting mainstream tourism it will also attract Sicilian gamblers to play in our casinos," said Philip Fenech, the president of the GRTU's tourism, hospitality and leisure section.

Ryanair's marketing executive Luis Fernádez-Mellado said the airline was launching its 12 Days of Christmas promotion during which it will be offering a million seats for prices starting from €1 for flights between January 6 and February 28.

Prices will start from €1 and will go on sale on midnight tonight and increase by a euro a day until it reaches €12 on December 21. The price covers a one-way trip and includes taxes and charges.
