Eight former council members of the Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses said today that they are calling for the holding of an extraordinary general meeting to move a no-confidence motion in the union leadership.
The former council members said they are circulating a petition calling for the convening of the egm. In terms of the statute, a meeting has to be called if the petition is signed by a quarter of the paid-up membership.
Tommy Dimech, one of the former council members, told a press conference that they were especially calling for the resignation of union president Paul Pace and general secretary Colin Galea because of a ‘lack of democracy’ in the running of the council.
They claimed that members of the council were sometimes not given information they were entitled to, and recent directives by the union had not been discussed in council.
Those present for the press conference included Corrine Ward and Ray Chetcuti, who have just resigned from the council. Mr Chetcuti had been assistant general secretary.
