Updated: Evictions from Fort St Elmo start
Adds video clip
Government Property Division inspectors escorted by a large number of policemen have started evicting squatters from Lower Fort St Elmo, although it seems most had already left after receiving eviction notices last week.
The operation started earlier this morning. The inspectors said everybody was being asked to leave the fort. Authorised carnival enthusiasts registered with the Culture Division were being called individually to show that their warehouses were being used for carnival purposes. All other sections were being sealed.
Despite this arrangement, several of the enthusiasts protested loudly this morning as they were told to leave the fort, particularly because all their "pets" were being removed by SPCA employees. There were about 30 dogs in the fort up to a few days ago.
Also taking part in the operation are workers from the Works Department and the AFM. A watch room for the soldiers who will now be guarding the fort was lifted with a crane.
Personnel from the Occupational Health and Safety Authority are checking some of the rooms to ensure they are structurally safe.
Parliamentary Secretary Jason Azzopardi has said that once the fort is cleared of squatters, an AFM guard will be posted to ensure they do not move back in.
Authorised carnival enthusiasts are to continue to use the fort until other premises are made available to them.

Mr Farrugia - I agree with you . But please don't put the animals in the picture. Quote: " We don't care about the dogs". These are innocent. They never asked to be put at St Elmo for whatever reason.

May I remind that these people were offered land at Ta Qali and refused it.
They wanted to destroy one of our heritage building to build a carnival village.

Mr J farrugia - Please refrain from writing in the plural. Who exactly do you represent?

I am sure that a place for the Carnival Floats will be found, but what about the dogs. Has their welfare been considered? I hope the life of these innocent creatures is not at risk. Dr Jason Micallef you are doing a good job, but please the dogs are innocent.

I am still trying to figure out what the "we" expressed J.F. represents. Surely from the comments so far, Farrugia must realise that a number of the writers who have Malta's heritage at heart, are also concerned about the dogs' fate.
Well done to the PS for reclaiming back public property from squatters, and hope that this exercise is continued. Unfortunatley many people think that they have a right to claim public land as their own, be it to build boathouses, retreats in the countrysice and to practice some so called hobbies.
St Elmo is in dire need of restoration. I sincerely hope that a breath of new life is breathed onto this historic world monument, so that it is retored to its full glory.

... and the Turks spent endless days and nights fighting their heads off to occupy the Fort!
Let's have this gem of a Fort back to its glorious state and yet another national monument to be proud of. This is our rich history and culture which is the envy of most european nations.

J Farrugia who are the 'we' you allude to in your heartless comment about the dogs? you may be surprised to learn that there are actually some people who care both for our heritage and also for dogs in particular and animals in general. Hon. Jason Azzopardi a lot of people are behind you in your quest. Please help the innocent animals caught in this mess and you will be remembered for your humanity.

Tony Caruana, Those who live by the sword die by the sword. these people broke the law and moved into St Elmo, without permission so you move them out without permission, besides a court order would take years to get .What I would like to see is that the real carnival float builders get a decent place where they can continue to work.

While i appreciate the work that is going on i would like to raise a point. Is not a court order required to evict somebody ?
If Some one squats on my land or property can I just Forcibly leave remove him ? Or do i need to follow certain procedures ?

Well done JA. Let us get rid of all squatters on public property.
However there is still a way to go at other sites.

I'm asking my self WHAT will happen of the carnival companies the day after 2009 carnival.
It is said that they will not be permitted to return, once the float is used..... will an alternative venue/stores be supplied for these creative and artistic people be provided? IN TIME?
I do agree that St Elmo be given that new life, but the people who live for carnival should given a GOOD replacement for their stores

The funniest thing is that an AFM guard will be posted to ensure they do not move back in. Ohhh common, is this the country of Mickey Mouse again....our armed forces used as watch dogs instead of guarding our shores

Keep persevering Dr. Azzopardi.....and never ever bend to pressure.

we dont care what happens to the dogs, at least St Elmo wont go to the dogs as it is. As for the sarcastic remarks remember that JA has no mandate to do that. His only mandate is to take backpublic land from those who usurped ot and give it back to the general public.

Dr Jason Azzopardi is taking corrective measures on occupied Government land. It would however be nice to see justice go both ways and that Dr Azzopardi gives land unjustly occupied by the Government back to the rightful private owners.

"Authorised carnival enthusiasts are to continue to use the fort until other premises are made available to them"
Wow I am really surprised. Wasn't a carnival village promised by the party in power a long time ago? What happened to it?
No wonder carnival enthusiasts protested loudly
BUT I agree that the fort is not a place for such things. the fault lies with the govt for failing to supply adequate places
