I am currently researching war casualties in Malta, particularly those that were killed in action or died as a result of the war at the Pembroke Cantonments (St George's, St Andrew's and St Patrick's Barracks). Unfortunately, records are not available, especially as Pembroke was then a restricted British military establishment.
The only casualties that I have located are Lieutenant (Acting Lieutenant-Commander) William Ewart Hiscock GS DSC of the Royal Navy's Bomb Disposal Unit based at HMS St Angelo and his wife who were killed at their home at St George's Barracks on February 15, 1942, when it received a direct hit. A/Lieut-Cdr Hiscock was awarded the George Cross posthumously for great gallantry and undaunted devotion to duty when he deactivated an Italian torpedo machine that was dropped in St George's Bay in September 1941.
I believe that the Roll of Honour in Malta: Blitzed but not Beaten was compiled by the late Philip Vella from official sources and while Mrs Alice Hiscock is listed amongst the civilian casualties, her husband isn't. If this error originates from the official list, than A/Lieut-Cdr Hiscock's name should be added, especially when he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and George Cross for his bomb disposal work in Malta.
I appeal to readers who know of any other war casualties at Pembroke, to please contact me at button@onvol.net.
