The Housing Authority has allocated €284,700 to help four families whose houses were demolished as a result of the fireworks explosion in a garage in Naxxar last March.

An agreement was signed early this afternoon between the four families and the authority through which the authority will pay for the rebuilding and finishing of the houses.

The amount covers the outstanding balance after consideration of costs paid by insurers.

Social Policy Minister John Dalli said the government was also helping other families affected by the tragedy. He said 74 houses had suffered some sort of damage in the tragedy, which killed two people. The government has also been helping in the rents paid by families while they live in temporary accommodation.

Initial works on the rebuilding of the houses have started.

In an address Mr Dalli praised society for having reached out to the people affected by this tragedy and said the government too was doing its part.
