Former Republican Presidential candidate John McCain made quick tours of Mdina, Fort St Angelo and Valletta this morning and is currently meeting the Prime Minister before leaving Malta.

Senator McCain, accompanied by Senator Joe Lieberman , stayed in Mdina overnight. The two were able to make best use of the fine weather to walk along the bastions of the Silent City this morning.

They then admired St John's Co-Cathedral and were taken on a tour of the harbour on board an AFM US-built Protector class patrol boat - stopping briefly for a tour of Fort St Angelo.

The fine weather was in sharp contrast with the superpower summit in Malta 19 years ago this week when Malta suffered a powerful storm and meetings between then President George Bush and Soviet President Gorbachev could not be held as planned on board two warships anchored in Marsaxlokk. They were switched to a Soviet cruise liner berthed in Kalafrana.
