Three Maltese were rescued from Mt Etna yesterday evening after having been lost on the volcano in Sicily, Italian media have reported.

One of them, a 47-year-old man, is being treated in hospital after having been injured. He is thought to have suffered leg fractures in a fall.

The three formed part of an expedition to the north face of the volcano. They were lost for some time and the alarm was raised by mobile phone by other members of the group, the Italian media said.

A search was carried out by Italian rescue services, who found the three near a shelter.

However later this evening members of the group who contacted timesofmalta.com said the three were never lost, although they confirmed that one of them has hurt one of of his feet and needed treatment.
