Owners insist they have valid licence for removed kiosk
The kiosk at The Strand in Gżira before it was removed last week.
The owners of an illegal kiosk removed last week after having been a permanent fixture on The Strand, Gżira since 1987 insisted yesterday they had always been in possession of a valid licence.
Taking their claim to court, Manwel and Doris Spiteri said they have been left without an income since their business ceased as a result of enforcement action by the Government Property Division.
In an official letter filed yesterday, the couple also claimed that, because they are in possession of a valid licence, which is recognised by the social security system, they have been denied social assistance.
The couple said they are calling on the Director of Land and the Director of Social Security to provide them with either a new kiosk or an alternative site.
They are also seeking damages due to the loss of revenue and the loss of social assistance.

The permit should never have been issued in the first place. The promenade is for the public to enjoy and not to be occupied with truck like kiosks. Removing it has surely improved the environment. well done.

When in Malta, I'm in Gzira alot. These establishments are a convenant to the tourists and locals alike. Who want to enjoy a walk along one of the prettiest strecth in Malta. I'v been to this paticular one plenty of times. I would have to give it a A+ on sanitary. The only beef I have is, he serves Krest instead of Kinnie. Maybe it's an old school thing.

About scenic spots marred by these vendors : I have seen a big blue truck selling sweets in front of the Mdina Cathedral. Would you see that anywhere?

These ex lorries parked on sea front sites are an appalling blot on scenic landscapes. There are plenty of shops that could be cafes and bars, if there are not already enough blocking the pavements, without dumping old vehicles all over the place. One always wonders just how clean they are too.

Same old story, authorities bully the common people who try to earn a living.

How much money were they paying to OCCUPY PUBLIC land?
Give PUBLIC property back to the PUBLIC.
