CMTU suspends MUT
Will boycott meeting on TUC
The Confederation of Malta Trade Unions (CMTU) said this afternoon it was suspending the Malta Union of Teachers - MUT with immediate effect.
The confederation said it had taken its decision because the MUT had not only not stopped its 'unfair and unfounded' attacks on the confederation's leadership but it had also 'tried to cast a bad light on the officials of the other affiliated unions'.
The CMTU said it would be informing local and international fora about new representatives instead of those who came from the MUT.
The CMTU said it had also been unanimously decided that no affiliated union would participate in a meeting called by the MUT to consider the creation of a Trades Union Council.
It said it could not have confidence in John Bencini, president of the MUT, who was appealing for unity among trade unions, when he and his union had continued their attacks on the CMTU.
However the CMTU was ready to hold sincere dialogue with any trade union.
The CMTU affiliates also expressed confidence in the CMTU president and leadership.
The MUT is the second biggest member of the CMTU after the UHM.
