I refer to the comments in On The Dot (December 1) with regard to gender discrimination in employment. The National Commission for the Promotion of Equality is the entity responsible for ensuring that gender discrimination is not allowed at the workplace.

In this regard we would like to point out that NCPE's function and remit emanate from:

• Cap 456 - Equality for Men and Women Act,

• Legal Notice 85 of 2007 - Equal Treatment of Persons Order, and

• Legal Notice 181 of 2008 - Access to Goods and Services and their Supply (Equal Treatment) Regulations.

NCPE works to ensure that Maltese society is a society free from any form of discrimination based on:

i) Sex/gender and family responsibilities in employment, and

ii) Racial/ethnic origin and gender in the provision of goods and services and their supply.

Therefore the issue raised by Candidus II falls outside NCPE's remit.

I hope that this letter has clarified our position.
