The Maltese Olympic Committee (MOC) have been staging the Sports Awards for the past six years now. This annual event rewards athletes who deserve recognition for an outstanding achievement accomplished during the outgoing year.

As in past editions, the MOC have invited a special guest for its Sports Awards presentation ceremony. Last year, Sergey Bubka, Olympic champion and world record holder in pole vault, was the guest of honour at the MOC event.

On other occasions, a special message from a top official within the Olympic movement was also read out. IOC president Jacques Rogge and EOC president Patrick Hickey are among the officials who have sent messages endorsing the objectives of the Sports Awards.

The MOC announced this week that the special guest for Sunday's Sports Awards ceremony will be Raffaele Pagnozzi, secretary general of the Italian National Olympic Committee.

Pagnozzi also holds the post of secretary general of the European Olympic Committee (EOC). Among a number of other high-ranking positions, he is also first vice-president for the Mediterranean Games.

At the Beijing Games this year, Pagnozzi was chef-de-mission for the Italian contingent, consisting of over 300 athletes and officials.

The 2008 Sports Awards ceremony will be held at the Grand Hotel Excelsior and will be broadcast live on E22 channel at 8 p.m.
