The Maystar, a bulk carrier which earlier this week was abandoned by its crew, sunk at 9.55 p.m. yesterday, 34 nautical miles south east of Malta after breaking its towline as it was being towed to Malta.
The Cambodian-registered 88-metre ship was abandoned 26 nautical miles off Malta on Monday as it listed to starboard and its crew were rescued by the AFM.
Although it had been expected to sink, a tug started towing it to Malta on Tuesday.
The Malta Maritime Authority said it was informed that an Armed Forces of Malta aircraft inspected the zone of the incident and spotted a very small oil slick 38 nautical miles east south east of Delimara. No debris or flotsam was reported.
The AFM issued the necessary navigational warnings whilst the MMA issued a Notice to Mariners.
The Cambodian authorities are being kept informed of the developments of this case by the MMA.
