The bulk carrier Maystar which earlier this week was abandoned by its crew, today broke its towline as it was being towed to Malta, the Maritime Authority said.

The Cambodian-registered 88-metre ship was abandoned 26 nautical miles off Malta on Monday as it listed to starboard and its crew were rescued by the AFM.

Although it had been expected to sink, a tug started towing it to Malta on Tuesday.

The Malta Maritime Authority said that due to the adverse weather conditions, the ship broke its tow line this afternoon and was drifting 29 miles East of Delimara, outside Maltese territorial waters.
