Golden Harvest yesterday inaugurated what it claims to be the largest and most technologically-advanced bakery on the island, costing about €20 million.

The plant, which boasts a daily output of 65,000 products, is energy efficient and equipped with environmentally-friendly technology, including a photovoltaic system providing 40,000 kilowatts of energy a year, cutting energy costs by 18 per cent. Solar water heaters provide hot water for the plant.

The bakery, which was opened by Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi, is also equipped with a waste separation system and water reservoir capable of holding 96,000 gallons of rain water for every four inches of rainfall. The water is then purified through a reverse osmosis system and used as second-class water.

All oven burners run on LPG gas, reducing emissions and contributing to the company's environmental policies.

The plant, located at the San Ġwann industrial estate, is spread over 14,500 square metres, employing 147 people.

Golden Harvest produces a vast selection of bakery, dairy and confectionery products together with seasonal sweets, luscious desserts, ice-creams and a variety of products for large multinationals.

The company is supported by a chain of 13 stores and a fleet of 23 delivery vehicles.
