Burnley beat Arsenal in League Cup quarter-finals

Burnley beat Arsenal 2-0 last night to reach the semi-finals of the English League Cup.

Kevin McDonald scored twice for the Championship side to see off an Arsenal team made up almost entirely of young reserves.

The 20-year-old Scot scored in the sixth and 57th minutes to stun an inexperienced Gunners line-up while home goalkeeper Brian Jensen made a string of fine saves.

McDonald made the breakthrough with a cool finish then reacted quickly after a Chris Eagles throw-in to seal a famous victory for the Championship side.

Burnley will be joined by another side from England's second tier after Derby County defeated Premier League Stoke City 1-0.

The game looked to be heading for extra-time when Andy Griffin was judged to have handled in the box, and Nathan Ellington sent Derby's fans wild with the spot-kick decider.

In today's quarter-finals, holders Tottenham Hotspur face Championship side Watford while Premier League champions Manchester United are at home to Blackburn Rovers.
