When Malta's unions united to present the case for the families represented by their members it was the best news Malta had for a very long time.
And it seems that they did manage to get something out of their determined attempt to ensure no unnecessary suffering. Thanks are also due to the Prime Minister who was prepared to meet, talk and compromise.
Unfortunately, the Maltese love of division instead of unity, even when unity has proved to be clearly successful, has quickly reared its head again. The game of divide and rule is alive and well and indeed flourishing: which is really a catastrophe. With Malta facing dangers on every front, now is surely the time to put divisions apart and refine the slogan of Flimkien Kollox Possibbli (together everything is possible) into one of Magħqudin Kollox Possibbli (united everything is possible). The unions seem to have been flimkien for a short time, but magħqudin apparently they were not.
I, therefore, appeal to the Prime Minister to make an effort and embrace all those elements prepared to put their country and the national interest first. There are capable people who, if they are brought together, can help the ship of state survive the storms ahead. What is needed is a crew of proven ability and courage rather than one chosen on the single criterion of political loyalty. In these perilous times, the nation must unite to ensure that what has been gained with so much pain does not vanish overnight.
Malta stands yet again at one of the crossroads of history. Let us not fail the future generations who will judge us by how we act today.
