Economic forces should put people first - Joseph Muscat

Governments had to ensure that economic forces respected society and put people first, Labour Party leader Joseph Muscat said during a debate between socialist leaders at the European Socialists Party congress in Madrid.

Dr Muscat said it no longer made sense to let the market rule with no government involvement whatsoever.

He emphasised the importance of direct contact with the people, in spite of the ever growing importance of modern broadcasting media and appealed for the message of socialist parties to be that they offered the best solutions.

The congress approved an electoral manifesto with 60 proposals. They include the creation of 10 million jobs by 2020, new financial rules, decent minimum wages for EU countries, and a fight against the trafficking of women and children.

@ A. Mangion - Ever heard of Prevention is better than cure? Ever heard of the Current Financial Crisis across the globe? - To put it short, the governments never interfered in the market. Now because of lack of control, the market collapsed, people are losing their homes and jobs in the process. And now every government in the world (except ours of course) is intervening to stabilise the situation. But now its too late, the market is wounded and and takes time for a wound to heal. But surely you are too Blue to ever be able to understand this.

@ Joe Vella - Can you at least be honest with yourself? This is not a propaganda website you know? First of all Socialism and Communism are two opposite ideologies. And secondly there were 3 other proposals in the same sentence from were you selected your part to criticise. What can you tell us about 10 Million Jobs? Probably you don't care since you have a job. What about decent minimum wages? Probably you don't care either because you are not on a minimum wage. But you are also too Blue to be taken seriously right?

@A.Mangion
the government has to intervene in the economy because capitalism doesn't reach everyone and we have very good examples of this issue. Socialism is good, it was just used badly in the past but that doesn't mean that we can't use it now in different ways from that of the past.

The European Socialist Party like any othe Socialst/Comunist thinking party in the world differentiate between sexes and age group. Why only fight against the trafficking of women and children. Why not fight against the trafficking of Humans, being Women, Children, man and for anything human in between for that matter.

Or Could it be now that Joseph Muscat is ok with the trafficking of immigrants, as long as, they are all man. If not, why then he didn't insists that refernce to women and children be struck out and instead substituted with word "HUMAN.

Trafficking is trafficking being sexual or otherwise.

have to agree with joseph on this one. I can remember a time when we made things in the UK and they were durable goods that the world wanted. Those companies paid decent wages and people could afford things. Next thing, those companies where listing themselves on the worlds bourses and telling workers: except less pay or your job will be outsourced, the government bridged this with the introduction of credit, so instead of earning a decent wage and being able to afford things simply by saving for a few weeks, we had to take on large amounts of credit to purchase the items from future earnings. look where this has got us? In a right mess! Not just that, we had to work twice as hard for the same goods because of compound interest and thus doing twice as much enviromental damage and using up resources quicker to satisfy a man made system riddled with greed.

But dont worry, there man made system can only fail, and they know it.
