CMTU warns MUT
The Confederation of Malta Trade Unions (CMTU) this evening warned that it would have to suspend the Malta Union of Teachers (MUT) unless it changed its attitude to the confederation by this Friday.
The decision was taken unanimously at a council meeting. MUT officials did not attend, citing previous engagements.
The CMTU said it had reached its decision after considering that the MUT had unilaterally decided to convene a meeting to set up a Trades Union Council; it declared its participation in the joint demonstration with the other trade unions when it knew that this matter still had to be discussed in the CMTU; "personal attacks" had been made at the CMTU leadership, and in the issue over the utility tariffsm the MUT acted with other unions and not the CMTU.
The CMTU said it hoped the teachers’ union would regularise its position.
It also announced, however, that it had accepted the resignation of the MUT representatives on its youth section.

The utility issue was a national issue and a case for the CMTU but the MUT chose to tread it's path contrary to CMTU statue. The MUT chose to raise the issue of a 'TUC" without the 'SISTER UNIONS" of the CMTU having discussed the issue at CMTU council. If the MUT is truly a member of CMTU it has to abide by the latter's rules.

Portelli and his MUBE/CMTU should start acting like a serious union. You have taken bank employees for a ride repeatedly. Now you try attack a serious Union like MUT.

I sincerely believe that the CMTU should reconsider its actions. The action by the MUT should be applauded for taking such an initiative. I must show my admiration to the MUT management...
You have shown the way...

Shame on you dictatorial CMTU.
You have betrayed your members when you accepted Gonzipn's diktat without consulting your members and you expect them not to complain.
How arrogant!

UHM is I believe an affiliate in the CMTU and it can pronounce itself on anything under the sun. It can also pronounce itself on the Government proposals without consulting the other Unions, yet CMTU does not censor it. CMTU, however, censors MUT just because it is seeking some clarifications. It is obviously very evident that CMTU has an agenda. UHM and CMTU hailed Goverment proposals immediately and now has the cheek to attack MUT. Sur Portelli, in-nies mhux bhahen!!!

I cannot understand why, a union which is simply in a confederation with other unions within the CMTU cannot express itself without permission. Had the MUT spoken for the CMTU then I can understand the latter's umbrage. But it spoke for itself. Is there a rule within the CMTU that nobody can make a move unless permission is granted by the CMTU board or whatever. It would be interesting to have this explained.
