CMTU warns MUT

The Confederation of Malta Trade Unions (CMTU) this evening warned that it would have to suspend the Malta Union of Teachers (MUT) unless it changed its attitude to the confederation by this Friday. The decision was taken unanimously at a council meeting.

The Confederation of Malta Trade Unions (CMTU) this evening warned that it would have to suspend the Malta Union of Teachers (MUT) unless it changed its attitude to the confederation by this Friday.

The decision was taken unanimously at a council meeting. MUT officials did not attend, citing previous engagements.

The CMTU said it had reached its decision after considering that the MUT had unilaterally decided to convene a meeting to set up a Trades Union Council; it declared its participation in the joint demonstration with the other trade unions when it knew that this matter still had to be discussed in the CMTU; "personal attacks" had been made at the CMTU leadership, and in the issue over the utility tariffsm the MUT acted with other unions and not the CMTU.

The CMTU said it hoped the teachers’ union would regularise its position.

It also announced, however, that it had accepted the resignation of the MUT representatives on its youth section.
