Former nurses' union president calls for successor's resignation

Former Malta Union of Midwives and Nurses (MUMN) president Rudolph Cini will tomorrow be calling for the resignation of his successor Paul Pace.

In a statment issued this evening, Mr Cini has called the media to a conference in front of the union's offices in Mosta, where he said he will also reveal information.

He said he will be accompanied by nurses that were part of the MUMN's council.

Mr Cini, who headed the union for 11 years, risks losing his title of honorary president after questioning the MUMN's industrial actions.

The issue arose after Mr Cini questioned whether the union should have issued hard-hitting directives in the dispute it has with the government over staff-shortages.

Mr Cini, who will be a candidate in the forthcoming European Parliament elections on the Nationalist Party ticket, said that, while trade unions have every right to take measures to defend their members, actions have to be responsible and professional. He added that whoever directs nurses to take certain actions should assume responsibility for their repercussions.
