Disgusting 'welcome' for bus passengers
Given the fact that many of us are forced to use public transport, I must say that one could hardly wish a nice journey to passengers when the welcome 'area' accorded on a bus to San Ġwann consisted of a couple of brooms, the rods of which extended as far as the first two passenger rows behind the driver's seat. This happened last Wednesday.
To make the scene complete and utterly downgrading, even the so-called cloths, previously and possibly used as towels, were on display.
Is this the way commuters are wished a nice journey, having to endure such an utterly disgusting state of affairs due to some very irresponsible driver and/or owner? I am surprised that the 'cleaning cloths' were not hanging outside a commuter's window to dry along the short journey!
For the guidance of the Transport Authority (ADT) and the Private Transport Association such an attitude and demeanour is not even adopted in Third World countries I have visited and yet such a state of affairs continues to be the norm in a country like ours priding itself on being in the European Union. It is well nigh impossible that the ADT and the bus owners' association are unaware of these disgusting practices.

This is the result of the buses being privately owned, the owner drivers have no respect for their passengers and some treat them as a nuisance, roll on liberisation!

Regarding this issue, I left a lengthy comment in response to a letter which appeared in The Times of Malta edition dated 31.10.08, titled 'Bus Inspectors can't instill discipline'. The comment was too long to transcribe yet again but worthy of 'repeating' as relevant to this letter too.

I didn't know Malta is a first country. So how come Malta still receive hand outs from other EU countries, like the Italians to biuld some new roads and so on?

Here's a suggestion. Employ some of the illegal immigrants to gather evidence against bus drivers who act like this. Monitor their rude behaviour to passengers, like the one who terrified two young German tourists so much they left the bus, like the one, under the watchful gaze of his many religious pictures that adorn his bus, shook his fist and swore at a motorist. Let's face it, even the poor countries where these immigrants come from have better manners on their buses than 'First World' Malta. It's useless asking ADT to perform this duty as they wouldn't dream of acting against their 'friends' on the buses.
