PN EP candidate launches green campaign

Nationalist Party candidate for the European Parliament Roberta Metsola Tedesco Triccas launched her campaign for next year’s elections this morning saying hers was to be a sustainable effort in which she would be placing major importance on the environment.

The 29-year-old mum and lawyer was interviewed by television presenter Peppi Azzopardi under a tent in Freedom Square.

She said that her campaign, with the motto “In your interest” would be placing major importance on the environment. She would be driving an electric car, using recycled paper and calculating her carbon footprint at the end of the campaign to offset this with a donation to Nature Trust. The donation would be used for a project to combat climate change. Her aim, she said, was to set an example.

Dr Metsola Tedesco Triccas said that in the next nine months she planned to meet as many people as possible and listen to everyone. She was a firm believer that local problems could be solved at the EU, even if they were minor ones.

A lawyer specialised in EU law, Dr Metsola Tedesco Triccas said that for the past four years she had been negotiating laws that would affect Malta in Brussels. She was convinced that her experience in the EU would help her do more for Malta, since she knew how the institution worked.

Brussels was a complicated monster but MEPs had a lot of power and could change opinions. However, they needed to know how the system worked to knock on the right doors.

Dr Metsola Tedesco Triccas contested the last MEP elections when she was still a student in Belgium, becoming a candidate just five weeks before the elections and garnering almost 6,000 votes.

She is married to Ukko Metsola, a Finn who is actively involved within the PN's Finnish sister party. They have two boys.

V Fenech (1 day, 14 hours ago. Regarding your Comment below, can you be more specific?
I am Sure that I did not hurt anybody's feeling.
V Fenech (on 4/12/08)
@ G Mangion

It seems that you've mistaken my comment to a sarcastic one. You're wrong . Answering in that way, you're surely one of those Nationalists that Ms.Triccas should disassociate herself with!

What you said is really worrying my friend. What makes it more worrying is that you and your party are too lost in what happened in the past that you can't even sort out things of the present and the future. With women or without women, Labour has managed to elect an extra candidate then the NP.

And by the way, just for your information: both candidates of the Nationalist party elected by the rightists to join the Europen right were men! Awkward, isn't it?

@jason Spiteri

I have just finished a very productive one-hour meeting with Dr. Tedesco Triccas and she does not think I am the self-styled environmentalist or a dinosaur you perceive me to be.

But I definitely think I need much more than an hour to get you on the right track (and I'll probably charge you for the service)
Marco Cremona (on 1/12/08)
To her credit and after my posting of my comment below, Dr. Tedesco Triccas contacted me this morning and invited me to meet to discuss my comments in more detail.

I accepted her invitation and congratulate her for poilitical maturity in dealing with constructive criticism. Well done ! This way of doing politics is a breath of fresh air.
J.Brownie (on 1/12/08)
Jumping on the environment band-wagon has become a favourable vote-catching strategy these days, because politicians know that people are fed-up with lip service green tactics yet people want to see deeds not empty words anymore - Pollution from obsolete construction trucks, delivery vans and buses is as rampant as it has ever been decades ago -same can be said of our ever shrinking country side to make way for the selfish construction industry lobby - I lost hope indeed!
C.Sapiano (on 1/12/08)
Good Luck Roberta. You practice what you preach. You will gain a lot of votes, hopefully, from people coming from different political backgrounds.
Jason Spiteri (on 1/12/08)
I can't believe how short-sighted some comments against electric cars are below, especially from people who seem to think themselves environmental experts, like marco cremona.

Far from Roberta's grasp of issues being 'very poor', cremona is missing the woods for the trees. Power generation from cleaner technology as a whole is an environmental challenge, everyone acknowledges this - and Roberta is the clear on this is her online manifesto "Malta languishes at the bottom of the EU table for the production of energy through renewable sources."

But as long as dinosaurs keep telling us that fossil-fuel based cars are our future and that electric cars simply get us 'more EU fines' (can he quote a single cent malta paid to the EU on this issue? I thought not) it's obvious that we'll keep adding to demand. I'd understand this hostility if she had limited her green programme to JUST the car, but it's clear that she has sound policy ideas across the board.

A very good initiative by Roberta Metsola Tedesco Triccas. Very good. (Your qoute)

why are you so Worried that,Dr. Roberta Metsola Tedesco Triccas is a PN EP candidate so
Much ??? mela l - mlp/ lp, did not find relable Lady candidates, to Compete with
Dr Roberta Metsola Tedesco Triccas ???
take a walk buddy and..................................
Raymond Chiricop (on 1/12/08)
I wonder what RMTT (3 surnames!!) thinks of the rampant destruction of our environment during the last 20 years of PN government (continuing the previous 16 years of destruction). I wonder what she thinks of the kow-towing to the contstruction lobby ... I wonder if she knows that PN's friends in Europe the EPP have the worst voting record in the European Parliament on environmental issues... locally the PN government left the transport system deteriorate for 20 whole years (yes that's environment too RMTT).... planting a couple of trees but supporting a party which has other priorities (such as destroying Ta' Cenc, an idea to destroy Ghajn Tuffieha, destroying the Ghadira nature reserve) is not green at all...just green wash.
K.ABELA (on 1/12/08)
If she is so dedicated to the environment why is that only NOW she is going to start using the electric car..... Who knows perhaps because elections are round the corner!!!!. Anyone who is real environmentalist does not wait for the most opportune moment to start caring about the environment. Next stunt please!
Cassar Ian (on 30/11/08)
Quote "She was a firm believer that local problems could be solved at the EU, even if they were minor ones" Do we need Eu to solve our problems?... no . A serious govt who follows EU regulations is all we need. ie. The benefits from EU should be given to the people not only taxes. a small exp was the dept tax which should have been long abolished. car tax and others like the recent disscussion in Brussels to reduce vat and inc tax bands to stimulate the economy. il bqija xejn ma jimpressjonani.
Marco Cremona (on 30/11/08)
Dear Dr. Tedesco Triccas,

It's trendy to be green, but a commendable move nonetheless.

What worries me is that your grasp of green issues (and indeed EU environmental legislation) seems to be very poor.

1. As Charles Sammut correctly pointed out, by using an electric-car in Malta you are transferring your emissions to our highly-inefficient power-stations - with a net increase in your (and our) carbon footprint. This is the consequence of the PN's lip-service to renewables and green issues in general over the last 20 years. I therefore suggest you only drive your electric-car in Brussels (whose electricity supply is greener) and use a scooter or a small car in Malta.

2. As an aspiring green MEP, I trust that you are aware of the existence of the EU Emissions-Trading-Scheme (ETS) which limits the emissions of our two power-stations (or face fines). And that that Malta is not obliged to reduce emissions from cars before 2013. So as things stand, your electric-car will only result in Malta paying more fines, starting from this year.

3. Growing trees does not offset your carbon-footprint. Please check your facts with the experts, which unfortunately are not to be found in our Ministries.
V Fenech (on 30/11/08)
A very good initiative by Roberta Metsola Tedesco Triccas. Very good.

But I think she has to wash her hands from all the partisan programmes on Radio 101 and disassociates herself from certain PN comments from the usual PN apologists on this commentary!!
G.Mangion (on 30/11/08)
@ Dr. Roberta Metsola Tedesco Triccas

You are doing Great, Well Done !
You are really, Worrying some red's down here mmm !!!
I wonder Why ? they are Paniking So Much....................
Angelo Micallef (on 30/11/08)
It seems with some you never win, if you go green you are accused of betraying the roots and if you don't go green you're accussed of ignoring the environment. I think if one had to in this particular case look at the website www.roberta2009.eu one would immediately that Roberta is not just another politician trying to win the green vote but a person with a vision on several issues including but not limited to the environment.
Jesmond Ellul (on 30/11/08)
If we can't give a sensible new face a chance, we may a well give up.

I checked her website www.roberta2009.eu and from the ideas about THE ISSUES that she presents there, it's obvious that she's miles ahead of manyof the MPs already present for the government in parliament.

I wonder how many of the cynical, hostile comments hereunder actually bothered to check what she has to say about things before slamming her?
C.Ebejer (on 30/11/08)
She must tackle the illegal immigration problem first and foremost. More immigrants’ means more housing, more build up areas, more burdens on our environment and less country side.
Doesn’t impress me at all, we have many SOFT aspiring politicians kind of, waving the environmental banner ghax hekk il-moda issa hux!!

Shuan Camilleri (on 30/11/08)
I have had enough of these politicians telling us they want to do something (everthing) for us when in actual fact they are doing it for themselves.

Who is everyone in this person's view? Is it those who have a PN membership card? or is everyone welcome?

Politicians should help the environment by being honest. They are doing what they do for them, their close family members and if lucky someone else who went about securing votes for their investment. No one does anything for nothing after all.

What they say to obtain votes is ridiculous. However they can always confess their sins each week and start all over again.
philip pace (on 30/11/08)
Dr Metsola Tedesco Triccas said that in the next nine months she planned to meet as many people as possible and listen to everyone. She was a firm believer that local problems could be solved at the EU, even if they were minor ones.

Mr Twanny Ellul wrote:-
By the way I heard her last sunday with ex minister michael falzon on radio 101 and she impressed me with the hatred towards mlp.

If to what Mr.Twanny Ellul implied then is this lady REALLY going to listen to everyone?

Can she be more natural and credible as I am not yet to be convinced about such superfluous propoganda style antics.

Charles Sammut (on 30/11/08)
Dr. R.M.T. T. using an electric car is far from green. In effect, its carbon footprint works out bigger than driving a small efficient diesel powered car. Unless that is you intend to charge it using photovoltaic cells or a wind turbine. Otherwise you simply displace your emissions from the road to Delimara. Generating electricity, transmitting it to your garage, storing it in batteries and then converting it back to mechanical power is terribly inefficient. Get your facts right because you can fool some people all the time but you cannot fool all the people all the time.

As MEP, how often do you intend to travel to and from Brussels? The present incumbents seem to be on every weekend flight from Brussels to Malta. That's one sure way to increase your carbon footprint.

If you want to be more credible you will need more than a pretty face, green dress and three surnames..
Noel Cutajar (on 30/11/08)
@ Joe Vella - Mr. Borg, can you tell why then the MLP under MIntoff and subsequently under KMB let the Green shacks at Ghadira, the boat houses at Armier, Little Armier, Ahrax and all the shanty towns around the Maltese coast line to be build?

I think you should answer this question as for the last 20 years it was the PN in government and NOT PL!! If you think they are illegal ask the Lands Department to issue an eviction notice. If you think that they should be removed, why are they still here after 20 years of PN government? They might be green shacks but still they are votes for PN!!
Tony Mizzi (on 30/11/08)
Has the PN become a green party??????

The history and tradition of a party can't be ignored, so blantly.

The PN was always a centre-right party ...... other were and should remain the priorities of the party.
joe muscat (on 30/11/08)
The PN always says in your interest, but when they are elected it turns IN MY INTEREST, Dr Roberta if you really want that we believe you start your campaign by convincing the PN ministers to use much more environmental friendly cars, no need of these Jaguars , BMW and so on....
D.Micallef (on 30/11/08)
I'd like to ask our green candidate here if she was in favour of the extension of the development zones by the Nationalist Government a couple of years ago? does she approve JPO's prescence in the PN Parliamentary Group after he tried to make a disaster out of a Natura 2000 site? would she like to see Ramla Bay destroyed? and what about the proposed road at Ghadira?
Charles Grima (on 30/11/08)
I think Roberta's website www.roberta2009.eu is very very helpful to get a good insight into the views of Roberta on several key issues
Twanny Ellul (on 29/11/08)
In the near future we will see her filmed driving an electric car, throwing paper and finally we'll see her giving a check to nature trust.
As if no one recycles paper, no one makes compost, no one has solar heater etc... very humble of her .
By the way I heard her last sunday with ex minister michael falzon on radio 101 and she impressed me with the hatred towards mlp.
Ray Pace (on 29/11/08)
@ D Buhagiar

Roberta is in the right Party - PN and a formidable candidate with considerable EU background and experience. Why try to belittle a prospective candidate on the shortcomings of other people in the Party - let her prove her worth as i am sure she is more than capable to do so!
Matthew Frendo (on 29/11/08)
Congratulations Roberta for your initiatives. I have read some usual negative comments, one of them is the blatant lie of a Dumping site in Maghtab. Maybe some don't know what is the difference between an engineered landfill and a dumping site. The one in Ghallis is an engineered landfill and that is what stands today. The rest its useless trying to explain however I invite them to log on: www.wasteservmalta.com to get to know more on the countrys initiatives towards the environment. Last but not least the former Chairman of the AD - Harry Vassallo once said that he was pleased to force a Green initiatives on the Government. Therefore it is an acknowledgement that things started to change.

Joe Vella (on 29/11/08)
@ Chris Borg

Always the little Elves comes up with some kind of excuses. Let see, anything that went wrong with labour in the past is a result of trying to fix up something that the PN did before. You really think the Maltese people are a bunch of gullable people.

Mr. Borg, can you tell why then the MLP under MIntoff and subsequently under KMB let the Green shacks at Ghadira, the boat houses at Armier, Little Armier, Ahrax and all the shanty towns around the Maltese coast line to be build?
D. Buhagiar (on 29/11/08)

Darren Zammit (on 29/11/08)
In the last few years Malta has witnessed an ever increasing number of people wth long...very long names. I think it's time to adopt the system used by European commentators to call Brasilian footballers. Instead of Roberta Metsola Tedesco Triccas let's call her just ROBERTA :)
charles marsh (on 29/11/08)
How can we believe her when her ministers an parlamentary secretaries drive in Jaguars, BMWs and Mercedes. Just another gimmick iand that's all. If she is so conscious about the environment she should report the govt to the EU about the clouds of dust and smoke all over the island. Don't try to fool us as we are not going to believe people who associate with certain circles!!!
m farrugia (on 29/11/08)

Franco Buttigieg (on 29/11/08)
Great campaign, with the motto “In your interest” and she also states that she is placing a major importance on the environment. This person does not understand the meaning of sustainability as far as I can see. Like most politicians does she think that by calculating her carbon footprint and offsetting this with a donation to Nature Trust makes her in any way a sustainable citizen? Sustainability does not work that way she has the concept back to front. Sustainability as about taking into consideration the entire social, environment and economic aspects of her actions and not paying for bad actions. So much to a sustainable agenda.
You sure will not have my vote or is a donation also considered for that?

Chris Borg (on 29/11/08)
@ Joe Vella re Maghtab. the Labour Government opened the Maghtab mizbla so as to close one which was nest to a HOSPITAL in Luuqa. If I'm not mistaken it was a hospital dealing with skin problems. Would you choose between Maghtab or a dump nest to a hospital?

And the point is that PN let the dump at Maghtab grow into a monster.....PN "closed" the dump at Maghtab and opened one just next to it, in Ghallis....typical....jghaddu n-nies biz-zmien
joseph E Briffa (on 29/11/08)
I wish Roberta every success..she should do well despite her young age. She has the qualifications, the training and the requisites to attract a lot of voters especially from the younger progressive set. Never mind what the moaners and the groaners say; whatever you do or say, you can't please them all. Now it's the BMWs and the Jaguars' turn to be denigrated, not because they are relatively high fuel guzzlers but because they happen to be the majority of the Ministers' cars. It sticks out a mile that these bloggers are taking a dig at the officials not at the vehicles. Do they expect the official cars of ministers to have a 1 000 cm^3 engine? Don't these people watch TV to see the official cars of ministers in other EU states and the company cars of top executives? But then there are always those who get a kick out of taking it out on the world.

Chris Borg (on 29/11/08)
@ Joe Vella. Joseph Muscat did say some time ago that that rule will be removed.....

And anyway, having a democratic process within a Party is by far more important than measures used to keep PArty cohesions - measures which, as I already said, will be removed
Joe Demanuele (on 29/11/08)
These are nothing but cheap PR stunts. We want substance not image. Will Tedesco Triccas keep on driving her electric car after the EP elections ? I hope that the Maltese will make a mature decision and fill our seats with a wide spectrum of mature and experienced people such as Edward Scicluna, Arnold Cassola and Simon Busuttil.
Vincent Galea (on 29/11/08)
How much should be disturbed and how much should be preserved? That is the contemporary debate. Should we deplete our resources to serve unending and uneccessary needs? Should we uproot trees to make space for suburban development ? The developer says yes. Population centres require goods and services even if it encroaches on the environment. Despite the cost humanity comes first.
The environmentalist disagrees. If we don't leave it, protect and enjoy our environment to-day it won,t be here to serve us to-morrow.
Whichever way we turn we are forced to choose. For humanity to thrive, the environment must pay a price. For the environment to thrive, humanity must pay a price.
Every creature sings its song.
Let me hear yours, Roberta.
Dane Cauchi (on 29/11/08)
If Ms. Tedesco Triccas truly believes in the environment then her first move is to oppose the planned road at Ghadira.
Franco Farrugia (on 29/11/08)
I happen to know Roberta well.

She is an environmentalist, through and through. In fact, she is one of those people who are very, very much into the subject of the environment.

As for the comments re' her surname, is it her fault that she comes from a family with a double-barrelled surname? And is it a problem that she married a foreigner? Get your priorities right.

My best wishes for her future.

@ Brandon Camilleri: 'One can never be an environmentalist and being in the PN.'
Is that tantamount to saying something like: ' You can never be in favour of freedom and being in the PL.'?
Joe Vella (on 29/11/08)
@ Chris Borg

Waht is even more important is not how the PN choose its' canditates for the EU elelction but the real questoion to ask is that if the Pn Canditates will by muzzled with a 20 Thousand Euros fine if they do not toe the party line.

The answear unlike the MLP canditatees is a FAT BIG NO? That is the real differnece Mr. Chris Borg.
Joe Vella (on 29/11/08)
@ Brandon Camilleri

Just have a looka at the Maghtab Mizbla my friend and you get your answear. Need to say more?

Joe Vella (on 29/11/08)
@ Ronnie Agius

You write; "'mill-paroli ghal fatti hemm bahar jikkumbatti'" and how true it is. What is also so true is that the MLP and little elves like you always talk and criticise wihtout doing any thinking or offer any alternatives so that the Maltese electorate can decide if the MLP is really ready to Govern.

Coming back to your statement above all I have ot say is that the MLP gave Malta the Maghtab Zibla, and the PN gave us back Maghtab as a Park. So I ask you, whom to your statement applies to?
Edric Micallef Figallo (on 29/11/08)
To Kenneth Galea,

I happened to have been there for the activity, Roberta Metsola Tedesco Triccas mentioned repeatedly that illegal immigration is a "problema" and that more needs to be done about it.

Journalists emphasise what they like, quote what they like, leave out what they don't like. People like Kenneth Galea, obviously, then get angry. I know the feeling.
Brandon Camilleri (on 29/11/08)
One can never be an environmentalist and being in the PN. The two do not compliment each other as the PN government makes use of the environment to collect more taxes to distribute to the few of the 'klikka' If the PN really love the environment they had more than 20 years to show and in most people's opinion they did just the contrary. Look around in Gozo and in our rural areas and you will see what happened as to what there was pre-1987. They just continued the distruction of some areas.

A good thing to diminish the local environemnt is to test better teh Public Transposrt and heavy vehicle emissions and tax them accorsingly and make better roads to diminish the double emissions made by our casrs at peak times ona weekely basis. No one can understand why at peak times one has to take double the time and hence emitting double the exhaust to go form place A to place B anywhere in Malta. That will surely help reduce the CO2 in the local air. Or maybe this is not good for the coffers as it will mean let tax collection due to less fuel consumption. Taxes.........
Kevin Borg (on 29/11/08)
Well Done Roberta.

The environment is really in our interest. If this is your agenda, than consider our support granted.
david borda (on 29/11/08)
Being environmentally friendly speaks volumes. Well done! At least she puts the future of our children above all. This means that having a green agenda will keeps tabs on the Government when she is elected.

We need diversity in the European Parliament, not that there is but as a country we need it, being a woman, a mum and an environmentally friendly candidate should make her a front runner.
J Abela (on 29/11/08)
I am sensing a continuously growing anti-BMW sentiment in a lot of comments.... halluna naqra bi kwietna l-ahwa!
Victor Fiorini (on 29/11/08)
If she loves the environment so much, why is she contesting with the EPP political grouping, which has the worse record in voting for environmental protection? This is not my opinion, its a fact.
Albert Gauci Cunningham (on 29/11/08)
Well done Roberta! This is the kind of politicians we want to see, those who do their little bit for the environment!! And it is precisely for this reason (among others) why I am not even going to look at the "blue" part of the ballot come next June (let alone vote PN) because while Roberta is doing her little bit other arrogant, know it all, failures of Ministers are running in their jaguars while they hypocritically pontificate about the harm of big cars and suck every penny out of our pockets while in Europe governments are acting diametrically opposite!!

Nonetheless I wish Roberta all the best of luck!! She's young and fresh!!
Criss Camilleri (on 29/11/08)
Wow, I am short of breath just by reading her name and surname!
James C. Grima (on 29/11/08)
Can Ms Triccas or any other knowledgeable person here explain to us pls, where will this electric car be charged after each trip? Will it be from Ms. Triccas' household or else from some governmental power supply?
Chris Borg (on 29/11/08)
Pn choose it's EP candidatesfor the next election? When? How?
ISABELLE CALLEJA (on 29/11/08)
Even if this candidate was putting forward her policies in good faith one cannot forget that she represents a party that has done little to safeguard our evnironment

Matthew Bezzina (on 29/11/08)
Ministers travel around in gas guzzling BMW's while this young aspiring MEP is trying to pass on the green message. Seems promising and we need to give these young candidates space to breath...
jason spiteri (on 29/11/08)
first of all I think it's a good start!!! but why drive an electric car when we can drive a WATER CAR!!! I mean electric car is still using electricity and right know we all know that electricity is quite expensive, and still the power station is still doing the dirty job.... there are many water car systems available and there are other water systems that work adjacent with gas. one can always google it.

I believe Roberta is yet another bright perspective from the PN. It is with such candidates that we can indeed make a difference in Europe. Best of luck Roberta!
Janet Barthet (on 29/11/08)
Why are you all so negative?

We should be proud of what the Maltese have accomplished in Brussels and Roberta is a perfect example of this.

She's leading by example!! What more can she do to prove she's for the environment? Stop attacking politicians as if you have nothing better to do with your lives!! Give them a chance... they're there to serve you after all!!!
A Micallef (on 29/11/08)
This is a good start to tackle today's environmental problems. Everyone should take your example and start acting in order to protect the environment. After all this is something which concerns us all.

First we had the green politisian and everey body knows what he intented to do and thanks to Dr. Alfred sant revealed all the details of the mostrous project and now we have the ep launches a green campain. This is only P.N. stratedegy to look a party in favour of enviorment but how the maltese proverb says 'mill-paroli ghal fatti hemm bahar jikkumbatti'.
M Borg (on 29/11/08)
@chris mizzi:
if they do nothing you critisise..if they take action and not just words..you critisise just the same! Finally we have someone taking action so YES she should be given praise for this one. Goodluck!
Byron Camilleri (on 29/11/08)
A green person is green for life and not just for elections!

She is making it obvious that she is 'turning' green just to gather attention!
Kenneth Galea (on 29/11/08)
Are you another politically correct candidate who is a sucker of the EU???? If you are fighting in the interests of the Maltese then tackle illegal immigration rather than the enviroment. No one will grab my vote unless there is a convincing candidate who is ready to fight in the name of the national interest.
A. Saliba (on 29/11/08)
Why exactly is this news? This woman is just a candidate trying to win the green vote. So what?
Manuel Mifsud (on 29/11/08)
To be honest, I was surprised at the way Roberta started her campaign. She sounds convincing and, as time goes by, she would have the opportunity to prove what she said.

Good luck and thank you for setting an example to our parliamentarians and politicians.
Maria Falzon (on 29/11/08)
Looks like she's gonna be PN's "Sarah Palin". whatever the case, good luck.
Katia Cardona (on 29/11/08)
She would probably do better competing for Miss Malta, but with a name like that, who knows?
Mario Xerri (on 29/11/08)
Dr.Harry Vassallo launched a green campaign 15 years ago!!!
Charles Farrugia (on 29/11/08)
