MLP against proposed plans for Għadira road

The Labour Party does not agree with the proposed road at Għadira and believes there are alternatives to the project.

Party leader Joseph Muscat said during a meeting with the environmental organisation Flimkien Għal Ambjent Aħjar that safeguarding the environment was to be one of the party’s principles following the approval of an amendment to its statute.

He said that the party was environmentally worried about this road which would pass through Foresta 2000. And while the Infrastructure Minister said that the road was to be developed, the Environment Minister said that no decisions had been taken.

The party, Dr Muscat said, was also worried about the development of a museum for St John’s CoCathedral saying that the Labour Party had questions about this development.

He referred to the controversy between Nationalist MP Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando and the Co-Cathedral’s Foundation in which the foundation appealed to the MP not to criticise it. This, Dr Muscat said, was not the way to tackle a debate in a democratic country.

Dr Muscat said it was worrying that these two projects would benefit from EU funds when such funds were supposed to be used to improve environmental standards.

He also reiterated the party’s disapproval to development at the Ramla l-Ħamra and called for the appeal to be refused.
